The series of oil paintings on books are made using cake decorating techniques and dusted with neon, pearlescent and iridescent pigments when still wet. Paint is squeezed directly from the tube into the piping bag where psychedelic colours mix and swirl unpredictably as they are extruded. Occasionally, trapped air in the paint applicator is released in a burst, revealing another colour underneath where we can glimpse the unknown forces, the fiction and the studio anxieties hidden beneath the surface. These works derive from David's fiction of an imaginary commune whose residents search for a mutated version of Clement Greenberg’s ‘viable essence’; a substance they believe to hold both spiritual and material qualities.
